Postanjyan Starts Hunger Strike

On May 16th 2011, Tigran Postanjyan started a hunger strike protesting against inhuman and degrading conditions in “Nubarashen” Penitentiary.According to, on May 16th, the leader of the “Heritage” party faction, Stepan Safaryan, addressed a letter to Armenia’s Human Rights Defender Karen Andreasyan, the Minister of Justice, Hrayr Tovmasyan, snf the Chief of Police, Alik Sargsyan.

In the letter Safaryan noted that Tigran Postanjyan, brother of National Assembly deputy Zaruhi Postanjyan, is bring kept with 18 other inmates in a cell only 25 square metres in size. Smokers and non-smokers are all kept in the same cell. They have also to sleep in turns due to shortage of place.  Safaryan also said that the inmates sleep fully clothed for fears of the insects in the cells. The inmates have developed insect-sting allergies and the smell of the insecticide has made breathing almost impossible in the cell. In the letter it is written that, according to the law, each prisoner must have at least 4 square metres and his/her own bed. According to Safaryan, the situation in Nubarashen penitentiary violates article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights. “We demand the elimination of these illegalities”, Safaryan wrote.


Tigran Postanjyan is accused of "illegally demanding and taking money" (amounting to 232,000AMD).
