20th June – International Refugee Day 2018

Upcoming update of the UNITED List of Refugee Deaths

Dear Friends,
We are writing to inform you that on the occasion of the International Refugee Day on 20 June, UNITED is soon announcing the next update of the UNITED “List of Refugee Deaths”.  The update will officially be announced around 20 June in the form of a press release, and until then, UNITED is encouraging you to organise actions to amplify our voices against the Fatal Policies of the European Union.

About the List of Refugee Deaths

The ‘List of Deaths’ currently includes over 33,000 documented refugee deaths compiled since UNITED started monitoring refugee deaths in 1993 and stands as a testament to the people who have died in their attempt of entering the ‘Fortress’ or as a result of Europe’s immigration policies. The aim of this ‘Fatal Policies of Fortress Europe’ campaign is to raise public attention and denounce the exclusionist policies of the EU. The cases included in the ‘List of Deaths’ range from fateful attempts to enter the impenetrable fortress that Europe has built around itself to those on clandestine journeys and during state-operated detention or deportation. Researchers are working constantly on updating the List, which you can download from the UNITED website.

Here you can find some ideas on how to use the List of Deaths to raise awareness:

Approach your local media

Share the list and the press release with all relatable media, and ask your local journalists about their opinion on the List of Deaths. What is the opinion of the public and the politicians about this high number of deaths? What are they planning to do about it?

Approach your local politicians and related Ministry of Migration/Integration

Write to your local representatives and government officials and confront them with the daily results of the hostile policies on migrants. What is their personal opinion about it? How are they planning to stop refugee deaths? Make them speak up and push them to have an opinion – or, if they avoid answering, prove that they are silent.  Universal Human Rights are violated and people are suffering on the borders of Europe. This cannot continue. We are all responsible, the silence of many is a collaboration in the same crime.  We all have to stand up UNITED for our rights․

Organize a Demonstration

Make our opinion heard! Wake up your communities! Organize a demonstration to stand in solidarity with people who flee from war and terror or try to seek a better future somewhere else. Politicians should be responsible for creating humane ways of migration. Be creative, organize a Death March or a symbolic funeral if you like, show that you don’t agree with these fatal policies!

Other Suggested Activities

Use the UNITED List of Deaths in a creative way! Read it in public, or let others read it. You can also let a computer read it, as part of an installation in the public space. Make a short play, use “Theatre of the Oppressed”, do a Flashmob in the city center or at another symbolic location.

Of course, you are also welcome to organise any other kinds of activities as part of the campaign, for inspiration, you can have a look at some pictures on how the List was used on the website.
